Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tuition fee at Five Star School for Music?

“Lessons are generally one-hour long and the tuition fee is $70.00. Half-an-hour lessons can be arranged for $40.00. Tuition fee is typically paid by the month for $280 in advance for one-hour lessons and $140 for half-an-hour lessons. Lessons are also offered by appointment if you cannot commit to a weekly schedule.

If you have a hectic schedule, you can call in advance for an appointment. The half-an- hour lessons are usually for children due to their attention span. Teenagers and adults usually will get the most benefit from one-hour lessons.

In order to maintain consistency and focus we recommend taking a lesson once a week. If you take too long in between lessons you will find yourself using valuable time making-up what you may have forgotten.”

When do the lessons start at your school?
“Classes are continuous and run year-round. You can start any time. Our typical hours are from 9am to 8pm, Monday through Friday and from 9am to 6pm on Saturday. Private off time appointments may be arranged.”
What age and skill level do you teach?
“The age ranges from as young as 4 years old (depending on the child) to senior citizens. We have something for everyone. Our 5 Star Method was created as a means for beginners to get-up and play quickly and we teach all skill levels from complete beginners to experienced musicians.”
Do you offer Voice lessons?
”Yes, Karen Ruth is our vocal coach and comes with years of experience in working with singers from all skill levels. Karen offers on-line vocal instruction in most major styles of singing except operatic and formal classical type vocals.

She also teaches guitar and ukulele. She can offer instruction in those instruments alone or combined with singing if the student so desires. All Karen’s instruction is on-line as she is no longer located in the Bay Area.”

What are you doing at 5 Star Music to keep students safe during these times?
“Wearing of face masks are required at all times when inside the building. We social distance teacher and student or student from student (for workshops) 10-12 feet apart. We have front and back doors to the outside that can be opened for fresh air ventilation.

All music stands, chairs, microphones and anything else that is shared are sanitized between students. Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes are readily available in the teaching studios.”

I have a 5-year-old child that would like to take music lessons, is this too early to start lessons?

“No. We have a special curriculum and teach children as young as 4 years old. The best time to enroll your child in a music program is when they’re interested. From our experience as instructors, we have been successful working with students as young as four years old.

At our school we encourage music as a form of exploration. We let the children try instruments that they are attracted to such as the guitar, bass, piano, handheld percussion and the drum set.

There are many different ways for a child to learn. But the key to success and an enjoyable start to instrumental and voice lessons is to make it FUN for your child.”

I am new at this and do not own an instrument yet, but want to take lessons. I am also not sure what kind of instrument to buy. Will you help guide me?
“Yes. You can borrow an instrument during your lesson or rent an instrument from us when you are just starting out. This will allow you to get a feel for different instruments and find the one that fits you the best.”
Are your lessons private or by group?
“Lessons are private, self-paced and one-on-one with the instructor. We do offer various group workshops. Pease inquire.
Is there a registration fee?
“There is no registration fee to start in our program, however you will need our award-winning Five Star Music course material. The fee for the materials is $150. The materials consist of 6 books and play-along audio aids from our Five Star Method. The course will be custom tailored to each student’s needs and musical interests.”
Where are the lessons conducted?

“Lessons are taught in one of our two, spacious, state-of-the-art studio facilities. You will find that most music schools will put you in a tiny practice room with barely enough room to move around. Our facility is a beautiful, professional recording-studio environment.

Our studios are spacious and well-equipped with everything you could possibly want to play, learn, perform, and record. Both studios have a PA system for vocal and band practice with microphones, stands, music stands, amplifiers, drums and recording equipment.

Each studio is a full professional working, musical environment. We think you’ll be impressed! The studios are soundproof as well, which creates conditions which conducive to learning and creativity.”
